The Corona virus spreads further and further in Germany. Thousands of people have already been infected with the pathogen, some have died of Covid-19. Public life comes to a standstill.

Many people are now wondering: what if I am affected myself? Here’s what you should do if you’re concerned with the Corona virus to have infected.

Coronavirus: suspected case? You have to do that now

Before you see a doctor, you should be able to answer the following questions:

  • Do I have symptoms of illness and if so: which ones?
  • Did I have contact with an infected person?
  • Did I stay in a risk area?

These are the most common symptoms

According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the main symptoms of Covid 19 sufferers are fever and dry cough. This affects over 60 percent of all infected people.

Over 20 percent complain about:

  • shortness of breath
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Sore throat
  • a headache
  • nausea
  • Vomit
  • Stuffy nose

What are risk areas?

Do you suffer from these symptoms? Then it is crucial whether you have been in a risk area recently. These include internationally (as of March 11th):

  • Italy
  • Iran
  • China: Hubei Province (including Wuhan City)
  • South Korea: Gyeongsangbuk-do Province (North Gyeongsang)
  • France: Grand Est region (this region includes Alsace, Lorraine and Champagne-Ardenne)

Nationally, the Heinsberg region in North Rhine-Westphalia is particularly affected.

Have you been in one of these areas or have you had contact with an infected person? Then you should immediately put yourself in quarantine at home and limit all social contact to the absolutely necessary minimum. Also call your family doctor or the emergency medical service.

What you CANNOT do!

Important: You must not go straight to the family doctor to avoid that other people may become infected. Even in the emergency room of hospitals, you should only go if you have serious symptoms, such as severe shortness of breath.

What happens then?

The doctor will give further instructions. If there is a justified suspicion, the doctors take precautions against further infections and report everything to the health department.

After that, you should keep in touch with the doctor about your symptoms. He will decide when you can participate in all social activities again.

I belong to a risk group – what to do?

You do not know if you have had contact with an infected person, but you are older than 65 or have previous illnesses such as:

  • Autoimmune disease
  • chronic heart, lung or kidney disease
  • cancer
  • diabetes

Then you should keep a close eye on your symptoms and call a doctor if in doubt.

You can do that to protect yourself

The following applies in all cases: Observe hygiene rules! Also includes:

  • Regular, extensive hand washing with soap (20-30 seconds)
  • Sneeze into a handkerchief or if necessary into the crook of the arm
  • Do not touch your face with unwashed hands.
