Can mosquitoes spread the corona virus?

Bas, Zoe and Delano want to know that.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is pretty clear about that on their site: The New Coronavirus cannot be transmitted by mosquito bitesthey write. “To date, there is no information or evidence to suggest that the new coronavirus can be transmitted by mosquitoes.”

The new coronavirus, according to the WHO, is a virus that mainly spreads through droplets generated when an infected person coughs or sneezes, or through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose.

WHO warns, therefore: “To protect yourself, wash your hands with disinfectant or soap and water. Avoid close contact with anyone who coughs and sneezes.”

Virus does not get into blood

So a fairly clear answer. According to AMC virologist Menno de Jong, it is not possible to spread the virus to mosquitoes. “The virus cannot be transmitted through mosquitoes.”

That also says virologist Mariet Feltkamp of the LUMC. “This virus never gets into the blood of ordinary patients and therefore cannot be spread through mosquitoes.”
