Migrants began boarding buses at dawn, explaining to officials that they were being transported to gyms and hotels in and around Paris.

Prefect Michel Kado, a senior official in the Paris region government, said last week about the evacuation, saying more than 500 beds would be provided to the homeless.

The camp in Oberville had between 300 and 600 people, according to estimates by the aid organization Terre d’Asile.

It was one of several dozen camps that have emerged in Paris and its neighborhood since 2015, when illegal immigrants from Asia and Africa began to arrive in Europe on a massive scale.

Camp residents will undergo medical tests to determine if they have any symptoms of coronavirus, officials said.
