Researchers at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have found that coronavirus stays on the surface of sanitary masks for seven days and can infect humans. Coronavirus remains on the outside of the medical mask for a week.
“If you want to protect yourself, follow the rules of hygiene, wash your hands often and try not to touch your face, mouth or nose with unclean hands,” said one of the authors of the study, Leo Poon Lit-man.
The study says that coronavirus can live on different surfaces from cardboard, fabric, wood, and stainless steel. Coronavirus causes a respiratory illness. The virus, as a rule, is transmitted by airborne droplets, through the sneezing of an infected person, but can also be transmitted through objects to which an infected person has touched, if you do not wash your hands, touch your face and do not follow the rules of hygiene.
It was previously found that coronavirus can remain viable on copper surface for 4 hours, on cardboard for 24 hours and on plastic for three days. Various factors, such as temperature and humidity, also affect the life span of a coronavirus. Therefore, it is necessary to regularly disinfect household items that people often touch, such as doorknobs, countertops and telephones.
Medical face masks, in particular surgical masks and N95 respiratory masks, have been in high demand since the outbreak, so there is a shortage of them in many countries. There is not much scientific evidence that masks help prevent the spread of infection, unless infected people use it. But, scientists agree that staying at home and maintaining social distance – this is the best way to reduce the number of infections and smooth the curve of the epidemic.
