Despite the state of emergency declared in the country, drug crimes remain. In the short term, Covid-19 has no significant impact on the illicit drug and psychotropic substances market, although there is no doubt that the market situation will change, police say.

In the first quarter of this year, 899 criminal offenses related to the illegal circulation of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances, psychoactive substances newly included in the lists of controlled substances in Latvia and precursors were registered in the country. This is 2% less than in the first quarter of last year, when 918 such crimes were detected.

In the first quarter of this year, 991 intoxicants were removed and examined in the country, and most cases were related to marijuana. Psychotropic drugs are in second place in terms of popularity, and MDMA or “ecstasy” is in third place. Amphetamine is in fourth place, and substances newly added to the lists of controlled substances in Latvia are in fifth place.

The list goes on to list methamphetamine, hashish and cocaine.
