Iran is covered by the second wave of COVID-19 – Bloomberg

Iran reported 3,134 new cases of coronavirus infection per day on June 3. This is a record for the last two months and twice the figures recorded last week. Restrictive measures in a country with a population of more than 81 million people were eased seven weeks ago, recalls Bloomberg.

According to official data, the total number of patients in the country is more than 160 thousand, of whom more than eight thousand people died.

“Strict adherence to measures of social distancing and the use of masks is absolutely necessary in the coming days,” Iranian Health Ministry spokesman Kianush Jahanpur told Iranian television.

Iran began easing restrictive measures in early April to support a weakened US economy. At that time, the total number of patients in the country was about 70 thousand.

The COVID-19 outbreak forced Iran to seek financial assistance from the International Monetary Fund for the first time since 1960. In addition, the government was forced to sell a significant part of state property and resort to loans in the local market.
