SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which causes COVID-19 disease, can infect not only humans, but also domestic animals, according to a material prepared by specialists of the Federal Center for Animal Health and the Federal State Budgetary Institution All-Russian State Center for the Quality and Standardization of Medicines means for animals and feed. ”
Scientists note that COVID-19 can become infected and the most popular pets – dogs and cats. But if dogs, as a rule, tolerate the disease easily, without obvious symptoms, then the cats showed signs of acute respiratory infection.
“In particular, the animal recorded fever, coughing, sneezing, outflows from the nasal cavity and eyes. Some animals showed signs of acute intestinal infection, accompanied by vomiting and diarrhea, ”the Rosselkhoznadzor said in a statement.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), no evidence of COVID-19 infection by humans from dogs and cats has yet been identified, and there is no evidence of the possibility of such infection. However, the possibility of transmitting COVID-19 by airborne droplets from one cat to another has been confirmed by scientists, therefore, the Rosselkhoznadzor recommends eliminating close contacts between domestic animals in those places where many cases of coronavirus infection have been detected.
