The new headquarters of the Honduran presidency in Tegucigalpa was transformed today into a screening center for suspicious cases of Covid-19 and almost 500 people were already waiting in the morning to be examined, according to a photojournalist of the French Agency.

The center will operate 24 hours a day and can accommodate 650 patients a day, said Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez. It has laboratories for the diagnostic test of Covid-19 and dengue fever.

The new coronavirus is spreading rapidly in this country of 9.3 million people in Central America. According to official statistics, the number of cases is 28,090 and the death toll is 774. However, experts estimate that the numbers are actually higher, because the diagnostic tests that are performed are very few.

There are three other screening centers in the capital that have received 7,000 patients to date. They mainly provide first aid and take care of the transport to the hospital of those who need treatment. Four more sorting centers were also opened in the cities of San Pedro and Tsolouteka, in the north and south respectively, with a capacity of receiving 1,400 people a day.

Without these screening centers, hospitals would be flooded with people, said the president, who was also hospitalized for a few days after testing positive for the virus.

However, most public and private hospitals are already full and have been forced to set up tents to increase their capacity.

The new presidency cost $ 12 million and has not yet been inaugurated. It consists of two 24-storey skyscrapers each and will house tens of thousands of 40 government employees. It also includes three office buildings, a shopping mall, two cultural venues and parking for 3,300 cars.
