The planned Chicago marathon on October 11 this year has been canceled, the organizers of the race announced on Monday.

Marathoners will not take to the streets of Chicago for the second time since its inception in 1977. In 1987, after the end of sponsorship of the sponsor Beatrice Foods, a low-budget half marathon with 3,000 participants took place in Chicago.

In recent years, the marathon has gathered about 45,000 participants, but last year a new record was set – 45,786 athletes in various categories from more than 100 countries.

“We wanted to continue this tradition in October this year, but our priority is the health and safety of the participants,” said the organizers, citing concerns about the risks posed by the coronavirus pandemic as the reason for canceling the marathon.

The same weekend, a Riga marathon is planned for another part of the world.

It has already been reported that the prestigious marathons in New York, Boston and Berlin will not take place this year. Currently, of the most prestigious marathons, only the London Marathon, scheduled for October 4, remains on the calendar.

The first and so far only competition of the World Marathon Majors season took place on March 1, when the Tokyo Marathon was held. True, only elite group runners took part in it.
