The second wave of the pandemic of the coronavirus infection COVID-19, which is expected in September-October of this year, will coincide with the season of respiratory infections, while restrictive measures may be strengthened in Russia. This opinion in an interview with “Rossiyskaya Gazeta” expressed Advisor to the Director for Research, Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Viktor Maleev.

Despite the fact that the spread of the virus in Russia has slowed, it still continues, while in other countries the daily growth is very large, Maleev noted.

“Recently, the probability of the second wave was discussed. The fear is justified: the flu season will come, one infection may overlap with another. And it will be necessary to differentiate patients, to carry out diagnostics. It is possible to strengthen restrictive measures, ”the academician added.

According to him, the first wave of the pandemic has not yet ended in Russia and other countries. However, “in the world in general, there is not even a peak yet, the epidemic is far from fading,” the expert said.

Judging by what is happening in other countries, the academician suggested that there would no longer be such a total increase in the incidence rate as this spring.

Virologists assess the possibility of a second wave of coronavirus in Russia

According to him, “most likely, the coronavirus will continue to manifest itself in local outbreaks, and a large wave will not arise.”

“I can say: the incidence will remain and will be. In September and October, when the season of respiratory infections begins, we expect a rise, we will not get anywhere from him, ”the epidemiologist added.

Earlier, the chief infectious disease specialist of the Ministry of Health, professor at the Sechenov University, Vladimir Chulanov, said that in the fall in Russia, a normal rise in the incidence of respiratory infections, including coronavirus, is expected. The second wave of COVID-19 will be weaker than the first, he said.

In turn, the former head of the world trade union of doctors WMA, professor Leonid Eidelman, said that a new wave of coronavirus infection should be expected in November-December.
