In Germany, scientists have found that coronavirus can be transmitted from person to person over a distance of more than 8 meters. They came to this conclusion after studying the causes of the outbreak of infection at one of the meat processing plants in North Rhine-Westphalia, where more than one and a half thousand employees were infected.
Researchers have recreated all the events and conditions in the enterprise under which people were infected. It turned out that the virus mainly spread in a refrigerated room with air circulation. Thus, the researchers believe that low temperatures and lack of fresh air affect the transmission of infection over long distances. Employees of meat and fish processing plants in many countries are under threat and social distancing will not save people from infection, the authors of the study note.
“Our study highlights SARS-CoV-2 infection in the workplace, where a combination of different factors makes it possible for (coronavirus) to be transmitted over relatively long distances. Now an important question arises about what conditions allow the coronavirus to spread over even greater distances in other areas of life, ”- said one of the study’s authors, Melanie Brinkmann, professor at the Braunschweig University of Technology.
