Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates gave an interview to the portal Wired, in which he announced that he remains optimistic about the coronavirus pandemic. According to the billionaire, scientists have made significant progress in the development of vaccines and drugs for COVID-19, so soon the virus can be forgotten.

However, according to Gates’ forecast, it will not be possible to talk about the end of the pandemic until next winter.

“The flow of innovation in scaling up diagnostics, new therapies and vaccines is truly impressive. With this in mind, I believe that in developed countries the pandemic will end by the end of 2021, and in the rest of the world – by the end of 2022, ”the philanthropist said.

He added that in some countries, such as Russia and China, the pressure on vaccine developers could be so high that regulators could allow vaccinations until the required tests are completed. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will take longer to approve a vaccine.

“We will probably need another three or four months to look for side effects. The FDA, to their credit, at least until now, has always adhered to the rules of proof of effectiveness, ”said Bill Gates.

He added that the Office is working “very professionally” despite political pressure.

According to the billionaire, US President Donald Trump is skeptical about vaccines, which complicates the situation in the States.

In general, the philanthropist was unhappy with the American approach to the pandemic. His frustration can be divided into three phases, Gates said.

“Firstly, 2015. If we had spent more time then on diagnostics, therapy and vaccines, if we had created simulations to understand what to do in a pandemic situation, now we would have done much better. Then there was the second period, these are the first months of the epidemic, when the government prevented private companies from registering their test systems, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) accepted a very small number of tests that did not work at first, and did not allow everyone to take a smear.

The travel ban came too late for little use.

And then, shortly after those first months, we finally understood the effectiveness of masks and figured out the value of leadership in such a situation, ”said the billionaire.

According to Gates, he was surprised by the high increase in the incidence in the United States – currently there are almost 5 million cases of COVID-19 in the country. He reported that some of the best epidemiologists in the world work for the CDC, and he expected the best from them.

Earlier criticizing the American authorities and their attitude to the pandemic spoke Facebook head Mark Zuckerberg.

“While all other developed countries are seeing relatively few new cases, the United States is experiencing record increases every day. At the moment, it is obvious that the infection curve in the United States is significantly worse than in many other countries, and our government and administration [президента] proved to be less effective in fighting the virus. I personally believe that the pandemic should have been approached more responsibly, ”said the head of the social network.
