In the week of August 3-9, 2020, a new record of the number of COVID-19 cases since the beginning of the epidemic in our country was registered in Romania: 8,582 new infections.

During that period, on August 7, the most new cases of COVID-19 disease were reported in a single day since the beginning of the epidemic in Romania, respectively 1,378 cases. Globally, the number of infections has tripled since the beginning of summer, in 10 weeks, reaching from about 6 million cases on May 31, 2020 to almost 20 million cases on August 10, 2020.

As of August 10, 2020, 62,547 cases of infection with the new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) were confirmed in Romania, 779 more than the last report, as of August 9, 2020. Of the persons confirmed positive, 30,311 patients were declared cured and 6,497 asymptomatic patients were discharged ten days after detection, according to the Strategic Communication Group (GCS) at 13.00.

GSC shows that to date, 1,385,334 tests have been processed at the national level. Of these, 6,607 were performed in the last 24 hours, 4,738 based on the case definition and medical protocol, and 1,869 upon request.

The total number of deaths among people infected with SARS-CoV-2 was, on July 10, 2020, 2,729 people, the number of deaths recorded in the last 24 hours being 29. GCS shows that 28 of the 29 deaths recorded are patients who have experienced comorbidities.

At ATI, 476 patients were hospitalized compared to 419 patients in the previous week.

With 8,582 new cases in the last 7 days, Romania registers a new increase in the number of infections compared to July 27 – August 3, 2020 (8,107 new cases). It is the tenth consecutive week when the number of new cases increases from one week to the next, after the number of new cases has decreased from the previous six consecutive weeks.

Worldwide, in the last seven days, the number of confirmed cases has increased by 1,777,904 cases, from 18,093,891 infections on August 3, to 19,871,795 cases on August 10, at 13.00, according to the Arcgis map, made by Johns Hopkins Center for Systems Science and Engineering (source: https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/map.html).

Of the total of 19,871,795 cases on August 10, 731,570 were deaths. In the last seven days, the number of deaths has increased worldwide from 689,625 on August 3, to 731,570 on August 10, at 13.00, according to the quoted source.

It is observed, worldwide, the maintenance of the upward trend of the number of diseases. The weekly number of new illnesses has continued to rise since June 15.

The number of new deaths (41,724) was, between August 3-10, 2020, increasing compared to the previous week (40,659 deaths). In the previous weeks, the evolution of deaths was as follows: about 35,000 deaths – May 11; about 32,000 deaths – May 18; almost 30,000 deaths – May 25, 2020; about 30,000 – June 2; about 30,000 deaths – June 9; approximately 27,000 deaths – June 15; about 34,000 deaths – June 22 and June 29; around 32,000 deaths – July 6; 34,500 deaths – July 13, over 37,000 deaths – July 20, over 42,000 deaths – July 27, over 40,000 deaths – August 3.
